How To Set Inspirational And Meaningful Goals

In the first few videos of this series, we looked at how to find your purpose in life.

Once you’ve completed that step and worked out what your purpose is, you need to look at setting goals so you can wake up every morning knowing what you need to do in order to ensure you fulfil that purpose.

The purpose of a goal is not to acquire some shiny new object or a large sum of money, but to grow and develop as a person in your pursuit of that purpose.

There are essentially two types of goals: End Goals and Means Goals (Means Goals are used to achieve that amazing End Goal).

Bob Proctor breaks these down further into three different types of goals:

A B and C type goals.

A Type Goals are something you have already done and know how to do so they are not a proper goal.

So, for example, 3 years ago you bought a new BMW. You decide it’s time for a new one so you set yourself a goal of buying one.

Now that’s fine, nothing wrong with that per se.

But it’s not a real goal.

The real purpose of a goal is not to acquire more stuff (though that’s a nice by-product!)

It’s to help you learn and grow as a person... to develop the potential that lies within you.

The second type of goal is a B type goal – this is something that you know you can achieve by doing certain things and following a plan (incremental improvements).

E.g. a company decides to set a goal to increase its revenue by 5 or 10%.

They know it is achievable, they just have to do certain things in order to achieve it, but they know how to do this already.

Whilst these B type goals may play a role as milestones in your journey, they are not really powerful.

To be really inspired, to be motivated to stretch yourself and really grow as a human and feel fulfilled you must set a C type goal.

Then we get to C type goals – these are fantasy goals, something you’d really love to achieve but have absolutely NO idea what to do to achieve them.

It's these C type goals that can really inspire you and motivate you. Perhaps even scare you a little as they seem almost impossible to achieve.

It’s what Earl Nightingale called a worthy ideal.

To work out if you have a C type goal ask yourself the questions below:

  • Are my current goals making me excited and energized?
  • Do my goals belong to me or do they belong to somebody else?
  • What do I really, really want?

Now when you set a C type goal you will absolutely no idea how you will achieve it, you just have to really want it, be able to imagine it vividly, hold it in your mind and be willing and able to do what it takes to achieve it.

It’s the journey that’s important – through this journey, you will grow as a person as you move towards your goal.

And you will feel happy and fulfilled – and that will put you on the right vibration to start attracting more of the things you want into your life.

So, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Let your mind wander and your imagination kick into gear.  Imagine as if you were a child and anything were possible.

Then ask yourself:

Are you capable?

and are you willing?

Science and religion each tell us we have limitless potential so even if you don’t know how it is possible, you are more than capable. Even if your previous experience tells you you’re not, that is because you’ve come to form self-limiting beliefs and we will be looking at how to overcome those self-limiting beliefs later this week.

The truth is:

You have more talent and ability than you can ever discover in one lifetime.

Your purpose should be to develop as much of that talent and ability as you can.

So, ask yourself: are you willing to pay the price?

The answer to that must be YES.

If not, then you should perhaps ask yourself whether you’ve set the right goal because if you’re not willing to pay the price it probably doesn’t excite you enough to really inspire and motivate you.

Make sure you have an inspiring goal, something you really, really want so that you are motivated to achieve it.

Emotional desire will give you the willingness to decide to pay the price needed, and when you make that decision your fantasy turns into a goal.

Emotional involvement will change your behaviour and your behaviour will change your results, and better results will lead to you accomplishing your goal.

Most people stay within their limits and just do what they know how to do. They don’t dare to dream. But you have to make a choice. You must decide to grow, or you will stagnate.

You cannot stay still.

It is physically impossible to stay still because you're a mass of energy and energy is always moving.

As Bob likes to say, “we live in an ocean of motion”.  Change is all around us.  You can choose to be buffeted by outside forces, or take control of your own ship and sail towards your destiny.

It's okay to want more. Stop feeling guilty about already having whatever you’ve got.

You can have more, be more… and give more.

Now, I suppose I always say to people, what is success? Because success isn't determined by the amount of money you earn or how big your house is.

Success to me is being happy and fulfilled in spending your time working towards a goal that is meaningful for you.  It’s waking up in the morning eager to get stuck into the day, with a sense of excitement for what the day has in store for you.

If you have a defined purpose and are moving towards it then you are already a success even if you haven’t achieved it yet.

To quote Earl Nightingale again, “Success is the pursuit of a worthy ideal”

Once you are working towards your goal you are already successful.

You know where you’re going.

It’s not the achievement of the goal that makes you successful.

It’s the fact you are engaged in working towards goals that are aligned with your purpose or worthy ideal that count because if you are doing that you will be stretching and improving yourself and growing as a person.  And isn’t that what we all want?
