The Power Of Writing

I was talking to a client yesterday who was doing an exercise involving writing out her new goals and she asked if there was any difference between writing them or typing them.

I must admit I’d never considered it before. I tend to do a mixture of both, so I did a bit of research and was amazed by an article I found looking into the neuroscience of writing.

Here’s a short extract from it which discusses why writing is so much more powerful than typing:

"The truth is, your subconscious mind works better when you are constantly building new neural pathways in your brain and then reinforcing those pathways through neuroplasticity. How do you do that? Every time you do something that makes your brain work it builds those neural pathways, then every time you repeat those same actions, it reinforces those pathways.

What does that have to do with your goals?

Everything!

Neuroscience has proven that when you write something out that takes deep thought like your goals, you build over 10,000 new neural pathways in your brain in one sitting. Whereas when you type your goals out on a computer, you are only building 600 new neural pathways.

If you do the basic math, that means you are building 16.6 times more new neural pathways when you handwrite your goals out compared to typing them on a computer. That also means that you will get significantly better results when it comes to keeping your goals on the forefront of your mind."
