Overcoming The Negatives To Find Your Truth

achieve your goals bob proctor find your purpose goal setting invest in yourself paradigm shift personal coaching proctor gallagher consultant rapid results consulting Mar 19, 2021

OK, if you still haven't managed to determine what your purpose is, it's time to sit down and have a serious talk with yourself. Nobody knows yourself better than you. You know what you're good at, you know what you love doing so you must know it inside. All the other people you know, your parents, your partner your teachers, your bosses, your friends; whatever they've said doesn't matter,

It's what you KNOW inside that counts.

So, it's time to set aside any negative comments people have made or any negative limiting beliefs you've come to think about yourself. You need to realise that we are all subject to negative comments, and have been ever since we were born. I doubt if there's anybody you know that hasn't had various people in their life make negative comments about them or hasn't failed at doing something in their life. Our energy is naturally drawn to these negative comments and failures, and we tend to ignore all the positive things and all the successes we have had and dwell on those failures.

So, before we move on, I want you to take a sheet of paper, maybe even an entire pad and a pen. Then I want you to relax and clear your mind and I want you to cast your mind back to when you're a child and think about what you accomplished back then when you were very young. Clearly, you learned to walk at some stage as we all did and that was nothing more than a series of failures! You will have kept falling over, perhaps banging your head or your knees, but you got back up and you carried on doing it until you were successful. At some stage, you probably learned to ride a bicycle. Remember what that was like? You didn't just get on it and start riding it, you probably had stabilisers then your parent perhaps held the saddle while you veered all over the place, and eventually, you managed to ride the bike by yourself and then it became second nature to you and you stopped even thinking about how to do it.

The same with driving a car. If you're anything like me, you probably bunny hopped your way through the 1st lesson, crunching gears and being absolutely terrified about the other traffic on the road, quite sure everyone was trying to kill you! These days I often go rally driving and confidently slide round corners at speed with steep drops to one side just feet away with no concerns.  Well, maybe a few concerns as I am not fond of steep drops!

In many ways, you've never really failed.

Life is just a series of lessons that you learn from and move on from.

Everything happens for a reason and in order to help you grow as a person.

What I want you to do is, starting with the first success you can remember, write down every little thing you can think of you succeeded at going through your life from childhood.  From learning to ride a bike; doing something well at school, perhaps winning a prize, passing a test, excelling at a sport, moving on to getting the job you wanted and successes at work, or in extracurricular activities. I was truly amazed when I did this exercise for myself. When you realise all the things you've done well in your life, you start to change the image you have of yourself and realise you are a unique person with your own special talents, and there is nobody else on the planet quite like you.

So, carry out this exercise and then come back and keep reading.

Now you've written out all your successes and hopefully, you're feeling very positive about yourself.

Now of course you've had failings in your life. As I said so have I so has everyone. But realise also you've had plenty of successes and when you do fail it's not that you are at fault, it's because you simply weren't in harmony with what you were trying to do.

My wife for example tells me I'm useless at DIY. Well, yes I am because I've no interest in it, I have no patience with it, I'm simply not in harmony with it. I know other people love doing it and get a great sense of achievement out of putting up shelves or re-decorating, that's great but it's not for me – I will just leave them to it!

You might have had a failed relationship you can’t let go of, that left you thinking that it was your fault and you revisit it time and time again and wonder what you could have done differently or said differently. It can make you feel very guilty and bring up lots of negative feelings. I know I've felt like that in the past, but I quickly realised that the truth is, even if you cared for the person the relationship was not in harmony, it wasn't resonating with you and if that's the case then you did the right thing by ending it and moving on.

At school, for example, I did well and got As in subjects I liked but didn't do well in the ones I wasn't interested in. In fact, I refused to turn up for my German O'Level because I hated it and didn't see the point. You might have failed to do well at school, but that's not your fault it's simply because you're not in harmony with what they were trying to teach you

Just because you weren't in harmony with those topics or subjects doesn't make you a failure. It's just you haven't yet focussed and worked out what your purpose is and what you are in harmony with. If you get that right you will inevitably be successful in what you do.

Remember, you are not here on this planet to do what anybody else thinks is right or what they want you to do.

You have to be true to what is inside you. Recognise the unique phenomenon that is you, and make sure you are heading in the right direction whatever that is. Whether it's painting or sculpting or teaching or caring or being a plumber or a mechanic or public speaking or being a mathematician or playing the piano, you need to discover what your particular gifts are, what makes you unique and devote your time to doing that in order to have a happy and fulfilling existence.

Once you've defined your true purpose, everything will start to flow. You will easily develop the right vision of how you want your life to look, and the sort of person you need to be. And then when you have the vision you can start putting together the goals you need to achieve to enable you to make that vision a reality, and we will be looking at those in the next few light bulb moment videos.
